While the S&P 500 hit new all-time highs, the equal-weighted version of the index lagged significantly — suggesting that the gains were concentrated in a relatively small number of very large technology companies rather than reflecting a broad economic expansion.
From a technical standpoint, the S&P 500 broke out of a multi-month consolidation range at 6,200 in the second week of June, triggering momentum signals across algorithmic trading systems. Volume on breakout days was well above average, confirming institutional participation. The CBOE Volatility Index (VIX) fell to its lowest level since January 2025 by the end of the month, reflecting investor complacency — a condition that historically precedes short-term corrections even in bull markets.
